Angiotensin II Antagonists 

  

Indications  

Treatment of essential hypertension. 

 

Dosage  

Adult 20-40 mg once daily. Max: 80 mg once daily w/ or w/o diuretic. Severe hypertension 160 mg alone or in combination w/ 12.5-25 mg hydrochlorothiazide.

 

ADMINISTRATION:

May be taken with or without food. 

 

Contraindication   

Biliary obstructive disorders, severe hepatic impairment. Pregnancy (2nd & 3rd trimesters), lactation. 

 

Precautions  

Bilateral renal artery stenosis or stenosis of the artery to a single functioning kidney, vol &/or Na depletion, severe CHF, aortic or mitral valve stenosis, obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, hepatic insufficiency. Monitor serum K & creatinine in renally impaired patients. 

 

Adverse Reactions    

UTI, upper resp tract infections, anxiety, visual disturbances, vertigo, GI disorders, skin reactions, increased sweating, arthralgia, back pain, leg cramps/pain, myalgia, tendinitis-like symptoms, chest pain, flu-like symptoms. 

 

Drug Interaction    

K-sparing diuretics, K supplements, salt substitutes containing K or other medicinal products that may cause hyperkalaemia (esp digoxin, lithium). May increase hypotensive effect of other antihypertensive agents.
